This can be a tricky situation and is highly dependent upon your personal circumstances.
Would your loved ones need to know or want to know things and how do you work out the difference between them? How complicated do you need to make things for yourself?
It appears that your loved ones most likely need to know information about the ‘day to day operational’ side of your life, such as your finances, Last Will & Testament, insurance policies, passwords, your health care, end of life planning, information about your estate and your final wishes. Things that your loved ones may want to know will most likely include information about your personal life, your history, and your story.
There is a saying that ‘some things are better left unsaid’ and in 1984 Hall & Oates from Big Bam Boom released a song with the lyrics
‘Some things are better left unsaid
Some strings are better left undone
Some hearts are better left unbroken
Some lives are better left untouched
Some lies are better off believed
Some words are better left unspoken’
The internet is flush with articles, newsletters, guides, and checklists published by a variety of people including emergency services workers and hospice care nurses and there exists numerous personal stories about what people want to say and hear in their last moments – words of forgiveness, words of comfort or words of love – the choice is yours, but it is important that what you choose to say will allow you to be ‘at peace’. For many who are left behind, there are so many unanswered questions, sadly, this is part of life and in time and with support, your loved ones will find their own ways of coping with their grief.
